These Were The Highlights For EDM In The Month of September

Ah September. The leaves begin to change, school gets kicked into full swing, and everyone's favorite season, festival season, comes to a sad close.

Artists begin their fall tours and release massive amounts of singles, mixes and EPs. Plus your typical EDM News drama; twitter beefs, bad PR; you know the deal.

Just for you, we've narrowed it down to the 10 most important things that happened in September in the EDM world of news. Here's our recap.

10. A bunch of long awaited EP's are finally released

There's nothing quite like the joy of a long awaited release. Whether it's an unreleased ID you've been hearing for months, or the full masterpiece of an album your favorite artist has been teasing for years, official releases can feel like Christmas.

September 2017 was loaded with some fantastic full EP releases from artists we haven't had much new material from in a while.

  • On the 7th, the most highly anticipated EDM album of the year, in our opinion, was released. ODESZA blessed us with their sophomore work; “A Moment Apart“. Solely on their 2014 classic album; “In Return“, ODESZA has established themselves as one of the biggest and most talented names in EDM. It was about damn time we got something new, and boy was it worth the wait.
  • On the 15th, power duo Galantis dropped their sophomore album “The Aviary“. This album served as a follow up album to the groups 2015 album “Pharmacy“.
  • On the 21st, Kygo released his “Stargazing” EP a day before schedule. This was the first release from the Norwegian tropical house DJ since his last EP; “Cloud Nine” in 2016.

9. Reputable DJ's get called out for not actually DJing

For as long as electronic music has been around, there has always been haters who doubt DJ-ing requires any talent and that's it's all just pressing buttons. This can be frustrating to hear from people outside the scene, but when some of EDMs most reputable DJs are calling out fellow DJ's, you got to think they must be a little right.

In mid September, Space Mom aka Rezz, called out the current state of a lot of EDM DJs in a series of tweets.

Additionally, LA producer AWE targeted Moe Shalizi artists directly in a tweet in late September.

Artists on Shalizi's roaster include Slushii and Jauz, who both took to twitter to defend their honor.

8. Dillon Francis, as per usual, does a bunch of funny shit

As much as we love Dilly for his fantastic moombahton and guilty pleasure bangers, we might love him even more for his hilarious and outrageous personality. The MAD Decent producer has one of the most followed snapchat accounts, and for a good reason.

Just this month alone, Dillon brought an entire Mariachi band out on stage with him at a show in Vegas, appeared on an episode of Hot Ones, and broadcasted a hilarious and relatable commentary during the release of the newest iPhone 10.

7. Deadmau5 continues to be as shameless as possible

EDMs resident troll, Deadmau5, has had himself another month of shameless honesty and hilarity.

At Atlanta's Imagine Festival on the 26th, the DJ trolled the crowd by yelling “1-2-3 Jump!” randomly during his set. He sold his famous Purracan Lamborghini, to make room for his 130K Bac Mono which he then took for a joyride. He also live streamed himself on Twitch drunkenly drawing Skrillex and Marshmello.

Joel also announced he has an album coming up soon, but in the mean time we'll just enjoy his bold social media presence and bouts of spamming.

6. Tchami and Malaa announce North American “No Redemption Tour”

Debatabely two of the biggest artists currently in house music, Tchami and Malaa, announced their 11 stop North American Tour this month. The tour doesn't start until November so you still have some time to snag your ticket before it's too late.

5. Ultra 20 hype begins

September marks a perfect middle ground between Ultra 19 and the upcoming big Ultra 2 0. Check out the 15 minute after movie of this past year's Ultra and register for your Ultra 20 ticket here.

4. Avicii starts his comeback

Starting in the scene at only 22, the EDM community has watched Avicii‘s health slowly demise over the past couple of years. The artist took a break from touring and live performances early in 2016.

But now in September 2017, Avicii is back and better than ever. The artist sat down with Rolling Stone this month and opened up about his decision to stop touring.

The artist also premiered the trailer for his upcoming documentary “True Stories”. The film will be released October 26th.

3. Burning Man shenanigans, music and tragedy

From August 27th to September 4th, the Black Rock Desert was transformed into a Burners paradise; the annual Burning ManBikes everywhere and breast milk drinking. Need we say more.

In terms of music, Burning Man sets are always A1. Skrillex and Diplo, as per usual, killed it at their Camp Questionmark sets.

Tragically this year, one burner was fatally burned from the 50ft tall burning man effigy when he ran into the structure. On site fire fighters and medics did all they could to save 41 year-old Aaron Mitchell, although he passed away on the Sunday of the festival.

2. EDC Camping 2018

On the 6th, the illustrious Pasquale Rotella not only announced the dates of EDC Las Vegas 2018, but also that this will be the first year the festival will include camping. This will be the festivals 22nd year, and the demand for pre-sale ticket were so high, the entire website crashed.

  1. Legend buried liquor stash for EZoo

In our opinion, this was the most genius and innovative thing to happen in EDM this month. Mastermind ‘Alex' hid a plastic water bottle filled with vodka on the Electric Zoo grounds weeks before the Labour Day weekend festival, and successfully retrieved it during the festival.

Kudos, kid. You win EDM this month.

It's been a pleasure recapping all things EDM for you for September, see you next month.
