Avicii Teases New Trailer For Forthcoming Documentary ‘True Stories’

Back in March of 2016 when Avicii announced his retirement from touring, the EDM community came to a halt. Aside from his tiredness and health issues from traveling, Avicii wanted to focus more on his music productions, while also maintaining his health.
Following the release of his comeback EP ‘Avīci (01),’ Avicii has uploaded the trailer for his forthcoming documentary Avicii: True Stories. On October 26th, Avicii’s feature film will highlight his career as a musician and touring DJ and will also reveal 30 minutes of his last ever live set which took place in Ushuaia Ibiza last year.
The film comes from director Levan Tsikurishvili, a longtime friend of Avicii’s who had been filming him on and off the road for years, which is why the footage in this trailer feels so much more intimate than your average tour doc. Instead of a polished highlight reel, “True Stories” leans into the exhausting, unglamorous side of being one of the biggest DJs on the planet — the panic attacks, the health scares, and the grind that ultimately pushed him to walk away from live shows altogether. It’s a rare look behind the curtain from an artist who spent most of his career keeping that part of his life private.
The trailer teases raw studio footage, backstage moments, and interviews that dig into why Avicii felt he had no choice but to step back from touring, even as his music career kept climbing. Considering how guarded he’d been about his health struggles up to this point, fans are expecting this to be one of the most honest documentaries an EDM artist has ever put out.
Beyond the personal side, “True Stories” also promises to give longtime fans something they’ve been asking for since the retirement announcement: real footage from that final Ushuaia Ibiza set. Thirty minutes of unreleased live footage is a big deal for a fanbase that assumed those shows were gone for good once Avicii stopped touring, and it’s a big part of why this trailer blew up as fast as it did.

Editor’s note: This post originally ran in September 2017, ahead of “Avicii: True Stories” hitting select theaters that October. Avicii passed away in April 2018, and in the years since, this documentary has become an essential — and heartbreaking — watch for fans looking to understand what he was really going through. It began streaming on Netflix in January 2019.
