Lately edmsauce has been feeling the progressive house and trance, so we took a few minutes to interview one of Armin van Buuren's rising stars, Luigi Lusini. Known for his impeccable production skills and ability to create truly beautiful tracks, almost every track this guy has ever made has been an instant success with trance fans around the world. Here we discuss how he fell into music, and what he plans to do with his life.
E: Let's start with the basics, how old are you, where are you from?
L: I'm 25. I was born in Caserta on the 6th of December 1986 but I was raised in Viterbo, a quiet city where I still live.
E: So a small town guy? Nice. When did you start making music?
L: I've always been fond of music. I started composing at the age of 18 with my friends Francesco Di Marco and Gabriele Turchetti. After a short period of time I bought my first console. In 2009 I started the collaboration with the label “The Clubbers” reaching top 10 in many charts. In the same year I obtained a degree in sound engineering at the Saint Louis College of Music in Rome.
But I started out playing at birthday parties with friends in my hometown.
E: Over time your sound has definitely changed then. What has been the inspiration for your music?
L: It can be everything, ranging from all the little aspects of my life, to a place or a picture I see, or something I read. Usually I produce based on how I feel.
E: I'm totally in love with “A Walk in the Moonlight.” That song is just incredibly beautiful. How long did it take you to make?
L: Thanks for the kind words! I was very inspired on this song, I wrote the entire idea in a few days, then i focused on the production. It usually takes about 3 weeks anyway, I'm very critical, I focus a lot on choosing and making the right sounds as on sound design, mixing and mastering.
E: What song or music inspires you and why?
L: I'm very fascinated by the music of the 80's and 90's, I love the synths and sounds of those productions.
E: You've been getting some play on A State of Trance lately, and Armin himself has remixed your tracks. How do you feel about that?
L: I feel proud of having so much support from the most important trance DJ, Armin Van Buuren.
E: It certainly shows you're going down the right path. Do you listen to ASOT normally?
L: I'm very eclectic, I like to listen to all kinds of music, from experimental to classical music. But trance & progressive are the genre I listen the most, for sure.
E: Do you plan to do this forever, a lifetime career? Or do you have other aspirations in the long term?
L: I have a strong passion for music. I'd like to work on soundtracks for movies and games too. Oh, I'd like also to open a restaurant, I love food!
I really would love to do this (make music) forever.
E: When you aren't busy djing or making music, what do you do with your spare time?
L: I usually go out with my girlfriend, spend some time with my friends, play video games, do some sports and try also to relax because I never sleep.
E: For us in the USA, Electric Zoo is just around the corner. What was the best concert you've ever been to?
L: A few years ago when Deadmau5 came to Rome, I had lot of fun – it was really spectacular.
E: Is there anyone in particular you want to thank for helping you get this far? Your role models?
L: My parents, definitely.
E: What about who is your role model or who do you aspire to be like in music?
L: I admire very much the works of Nobuo Uematsu and Two Steps From Hell.
Overall, assessment? This down-to-earth DJ is going places, and his sound definitely shows his off not only his passion for music but his goodhearted attitude. We dig Luigi Lusini, and we hope you'll keep an eye on this up and coming artist!
