Robin Schulz became one of the faces of tropical house before “tropical house” was even really an agreed-upon genre name. Born in 1987 in Osnabrück, Germany, he started DJing at 17 and moved into production a couple years later, eventually co-founding his own label, Lausbuben Records, with childhood friends.

His real breakthrough came out of nowhere in February 2014, when his remix of Mr. Probz’s “Waves” caught fire. It slowed the original down, added warm chords and a rolling summer groove, and turned into a worldwide smash, topping charts across Europe and earning Schulz a Grammy nomination for Best Remixed Recording. That one remix basically kickstarted a sound that would dominate beach clubs and festival sunset sets for years.

He kept the streak going with his remix of Lilly Wood & The Prick’s “Prayer in C,” which topped charts in more than 20 countries, and “Sun Goes Down” featuring Jasmine Thompson. His 2015 album Sugar, led by the Francesco Yates collab of the same name, pushed his sound further into pop territory and racked up well over a billion streams. A year later he teamed up with David Guetta and Cheat Codes for “Shed a Light,” and later worked with Nick Jonas on “Right Now,” cementing himself as one of the go-to producers for warm, radio-ready dance-pop.

Schulz has never really slowed down since. He’s continued dropping albums, most recently IIII, kept touring internationally, and even built out a lifestyle brand around his sound with a fashion line, Q/S Designed by Robin Schulz, and a feature-length documentary, Robin Schulz – The Movie.

What sets Robin Schulz apart is consistency — his productions are polished and built for outdoor stages, but they never lose the laid-back, feel-good core that made “Waves” hit so hard in the first place. Well over a decade into his career, he’s still one of European dance music’s most reliable hitmakers, and one of the artists most responsible for turning tropical house into a global sound instead of a regional trend.
