The Empire of Apollo: An Interview with Ben Hall of Delta Heavy

Ben Hall and Simon James, aka Delta Heavy, have become one of the most exciting duos to hit dance floors! Known for their harder, multi textured sounds; Delta Heavy has conquered the clubs and are now in the process of finishing up their debut album!

Ben and Simon met at Nottingham University, where both were coming to a crossroads in regards to which direction they wanted to take their lives.

“We kind of knew each other through mutual friends… We moved to London and we asked ourselves; “what career are we going to do.” We both realized we were on the same boat and we wanted to give music a shot. It’s the only thing we really loved and saw ourselves doing”.

“A lot of our skill sets are complimentary; Simon’s more classically trained and I’m more engineering.”

Delta Heavy has always been about the quality of their sound over quantity, which is evident when you look at the gap between the release of “Empire” and their “Apollo”EP.  Their production process involves “a lot of pain, haha! Some tracks kind of come together quickly, within 3 days, some come together in months. It all depends. Sometimes stuff comes quickly, other times it’s a bit of a struggle.”

This “quality over quantity” work ethic is what makes Delta Heavy so popular and why they have so much support from fans. “Get By” got a million hits in two days and their remix of Nero’s “Must Be The Feeling” has nearly 7 million views on YouTube and over a 100,000 downloads on SoundCloud.

“It’s the best feeling ever. It’s why we do THIS. I’m not doing this to make money. If I wanted to make money, I’d be working in London. We’re doing the Job we love and it’s nice that people just like the music we make. It’s the best feeling ever!”

With Ben and Simon hard at work on their debut album, it’s going to be a very different direction for the duo.

“The production values are heavy, heavy hitting, but it’s kind of an advancement, or progression, from what we’re known for. We’re known for quite heavy noise, but it’s a lot more musical. We’ve got a lot of vocals on it and it’ll be a bit more of a journey. I think it’ll take a few people by surprise. More songs, rather than just sample vocals. It will have some big, danceable tracks, but we’re trying to blend the Delta Heavy bass sounds with more musicality and it’s that kind of blend.”

Although it will be some time before they release their album, we can expect it “March or April in 2015.”

With so much support from people around the world, there’s one last thing Ben would like all of Delta Heavy’s fans to know.

“As always, thank you so much for the support. The first single off the album is called “Reborn” and will be out in November. It’s going to be the first of 3 or 4 singles from the album. It’s got a really interesting Music Video, and it feels good to get some music out again. Thanks for all the support.”
