DJ Mag Top 100 DJs 2017 Voting Opens To The Public

The annual DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll opens today to the public. This year, DJ Mag has partnered with the humanitarian organization UNICEF, with the campaign framed as “Top 100 DJs in aid of UNICEF” — a push to get fans voting while also raising awareness (and funds) for UNICEF’s work protecting children around the world. Despite the heavy criticism DJ Mag gets every single year over how legitimate or representative the results actually are, it remains one of the year’s biggest music polls across all different genres of music, and the industry still treats results night like a big deal.

Back in 2016, the 20-year-old Martin Garrix was voted the youngest DJ to ever be crowned the #1 title. In 2015, the controversial Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike took the crown, and in the two years before that, Hardwell took home the year’s best DJ title in both 2013 and 2014. That run makes for a pretty interesting stretch of poll history — four different acts, four very different sounds, all crowned the “best” DJ in the world within a few years of each other, which says a lot about how fast the top of this genre turns over.

Every year the same debate resurfaces too: is this poll actually a measure of talent, or just a measure of who has the biggest, most organized online fanbase willing to vote every single day? DJ Mag has leaned into that criticism a bit by tying this year’s edition to a charitable cause, which at least gives people voting for their favorite DJ a reason to feel a little better about mass-refreshing a webpage for two weeks straight.

Update: when the votes were finally tallied, Martin Garrix ended up defending his crown, taking the #1 spot for a second consecutive year when results were revealed that October at Amsterdam Dance Event. Over a million legitimate votes were reportedly cast in the poll, and David Guetta — one of Garrix’s collaborators — was the one who handed him the trophy on stage at Amsterdam ArenA. Whether or not you buy into the poll’s methodology, that’s a serious number of people who bothered to go vote.
