Above and Beyond has released the Seven Lions remix of Sahara Love. Jeff Montalvo has once again proven his ability to improve on perfection. In 2011 I stumbled upon a remix of Ocean Lab’s Satellite by an unknown Seven Lions and that moment changed the course of my entire life. That particular moment was the first time I absolutely had to know more about this artist and thus began my career of blog searching where I then found the Above and Beyond – You Gotta Go (Seven Lions Remix) and I was hooked. Seven EP’s and countless singles later I still hold Seven Lions as the gold standard of Melodic Dubstep and EDM in general.
This is a soup to nuts remix of Sahara Love, not just some rookie flip where you just add your own drums and rework the drop. Seven Lions takes the amazing vocals of Zoë Johnston and creates a world of sound around it. Shifting the track from an indie pop feel to more electronic while keeping the love in the track is something only Seven Lions could do. The melody created in this rendition carries the vocals through the break where the music fades away leaving the isolated vocals pulling on your heartstrings. You know when you are listening to a song and you are thinking “WHY CAN'T THIS SONG GO ANY LOUDER!” that is when you suddenly hear the line “Cuz the arms of the sun HAVE FOUND YOU!” Seven Lions doubles up on the vocals and harmonizes that part doubling the size of the song sending the song into the atmosphere. The track explodes into a perfect melodic dubstep drop. I have yet to make it through that first drop without breaking down. Seven Lions complex sound design is a perfect catalyst for Above and Beyond tracks to explore the heavier side of the dance music spectrum; This was true 8 years ago and rings true to this day.
