Watch Marshmello Play A Live Set Inside Of Fortnite
Fortnite may be the biggest spectacle currently in all of video games. Marshmello may be the biggest spectacle currently in all of Electronic Dance Music. Put those two together and what do you get? Probably one of the coolest glimpses into the future we may have ever seen.
On Saturday, Marshmello played a LIVE concert inside of the Fortnite video game. Yes, at 2 pm est, you could head into a 30v30 lobby, drop over at Pleasant Park and there was a FULL stage set up ready to go with Marshmello DJ’ing AND ACTUALLY TALKING LIVE. With damage turned off while at the concert, you got lobbies full of 60 people each doing Fortnite dances, the worm, the Marsh walk, and other crazy emotes.
Turns out this wasn’t just a fun stunt for the weekend, it turned into an actual moment in music history. According to Epic Games, over 10.7 million players logged into the game at the same time to catch Marshmello’s set at Pleasant Park on February 2, 2019, which at the time made it one of the most-attended concerts of any kind ever, real world venues included. Because so many people wanted in and servers can only hold so many players per lobby, Epic ran an encore of the whole show about twelve hours later so fans in different time zones didn’t get left out.
The set itself ran through eight songs off Marshmello’s discography, all timed up with a full in-game light show, moving platforms, and zero-gravity bits that no actual festival stage could ever pull off. It was basically a preview of where live music might be headed, blending a real DJ set with a video game engine instead of a physical venue.
Looking back, this concert kind of kicked the door open for artists performing inside video games as a real touring option. Travis Scott followed it up about a year later with his own Fortnite show that pulled in even bigger numbers, and plenty of other artists and games have been chasing that same in-game concert magic ever since. Not bad for something that started as a wild “what if” between a video game and a DJ in a marshmallow helmet.
