Marshmello’s “Alone” Hits The 1 Billion View Mark On YouTube
The Marshmello track that started it all for many fans, “Alone”, is creeping up on turning three years old. Earlier this week, “Alone” hit the legendary 1 billion views mark on YouTube. Marshmello’s track now joins the ‘billion views club’ alongside songs like PSY’s “Gangnam Style”, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” and Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito”.
That’s genuinely rarefied air. The billion view club is a pretty short list packed almost entirely with global pop juggernauts, so seeing an instrumental dance track from a then-mysterious masked producer crack that same milestone says a lot about just how far “Alone” traveled beyond the EDM bubble. This wasn’t a song boosted by a viral dance challenge or a huge pop feature, it was largely just word of mouth, radio play, and a killer hook doing the heavy lifting over three years.
Like many of Marshmello’s videos following “Alone”, it told a story. As you’d expect from the title, the video and lyrics were fairly sad, yet the beat was upbeat. That balance, along with the mystery of the then up-and-coming producer, were contributing factors in Marshmello’s new achievement.
It’s worth remembering just how early “Alone” came in Marshmello’s career. Back in 2016, almost nobody knew who was actually behind the marshmallow helmet, and the track dropped with basically zero star power attached to it beyond the mystery itself. That combination of an anonymous act and an emotionally resonant, radio-friendly beat turned out to be a winning formula that a lot of artists have tried to copy since, with mixed results. Few have come close to replicating what Marshmello managed to do with this single track.
Hitting a billion views also cements “Alone” as one of the most successful pieces of instrumental dance music ever released, competing with tracks that had massive vocal hooks and star-studded features behind them. For a producer who started out with almost no public identity to speak of, that’s an incredible flex, and it puts “Alone” in the conversation as one of the defining dance tracks of its entire generation.
Milestones like this also say something about staying power. Plenty of songs spike hard on release and fade out of the cultural conversation within a year or two, but “Alone” kept racking up streams and views steadily for three straight years to get here. That kind of long tail growth is a much stronger indicator of a song’s actual staying power than any first week chart position could ever be.
