The Swedish producer had spent the better part of a decade as one of the most influential names in electronic music, with tracks like “Levels,” “Wake Me Up,” and “Hey Brother” helping push dance music into the mainstream and inspiring a generation of producers who followed him. News of his death sent shockwaves through the entire music community, with tributes pouring in from artists across every genre, not just electronic.
Just weeks ago, the person responsible for giving Mike Posner the pill at an Avicii show in Ibiza revealed himself on Twitter. With Mike Posner in disbelief, Avicii later found the news and retweeted it to all of his followers as well. The connection between the two runs deeper than a single retweet. “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” directly references Avicii in its lyrics, chronicling a night out at one of his shows, and that history is exactly why Posner chose to strip the song down to just his voice and a guitar for this performance rather than play the radio version fans know from the charts.
In the days following his Coachella set, Posner spoke about Avicii’s death in an interview with TMZ, calling it “a harsh reminder” that “nothing lasts forever.” He shared that the song “definitely has a much deeper meaning now” and said it “will always make him think of Tim.” Posner also said he wants his friend remembered for his music above all else, calling that “the highest honor for musicians” — a sentiment plenty of artists echoed in their own tributes that week.
