Watch Marshmello ‘Drop A Pre-Recorded Set’ In His Preview Video for ‘Moving On’
We know Marshmello had been teasing what would become one of his biggest hits, “Moving On,” for almost two years by this point. Fans rejoiced when the chart-topping producer announced the song would finally be released that Friday, May 5th. What we didn’t know was that Marshmello would also be dropping a music video alongside the track.
Marshmello had just posted a teaser of the video on Twitter, and honestly, it looked perfect already. Marshmello, whose success brought him some tough critics, pokes fun at the notion of pre-recorded sets in the video while depicting a graduation. It seemed to be a follow-up to his video for “Alone,” which also took place at a school. You have to love Marshmello‘s sense of humor — regardless of the hate he received, he was always a good sport. “Moving On” Finally Arrived
Marshmello delivered on the promise: “Moving On” officially dropped May 5, 2017 through Joytime Collective and charted on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. The accompanying music video leaned all the way into the joke from the teaser, following an animated Marshmello through a graduation ceremony alongside fellow producers Slushii, Skrillex, and Ookay, who all showed up as fellow graduates for the cameo everyone had been promised.
Two Years In The Making
The track had been floating around since 2015, with Marshmello playing snippets of it during live sets long before it ever had an official release date, which only built the hype further. By the time it finally dropped, “Moving On” felt less like a new single and more like the closing of a chapter, one Marshmello capped off with a video that poked fun at himself as much as anyone else.
The Mask Stayed On, As Always
What made all of this even funnier at the time was that Marshmello’s identity was still officially a mystery to the public in 2017, even though fans had long speculated it was producer Chris Comstock behind the helmet. That anonymity only made the self-deprecating “pre-recorded set” joke land harder, since Marshmello was essentially poking fun at his own critics without ever breaking character.
