Fake Porter Robinson Track Appears Online Amidst Rumors of Upcoming New Material Release

Ever since the last year’s monumental release of Worlds, fans have been intensely craving new music from the talented Porter Robinson, riding off the success of his Shelter tour with Madeon that officially closed out a couple weekends ago at this year’s Coachella.

According to certain sources, Porter’s Google Drive was apparently leaked and rumored to be circling on the internet. Today, internet sources were wholeheartedly convinced that new Porter had actually surfaced, as a new track appeared to be a Porter original but was quickly shot down in a confirmed tweet,

Porter quickly deleted the tweet above and replaced the reply with the following below,

As Porter is historically known for taking great pride in his art, the frustration that unfolded was quickly hindered by an emotional response; as like any artist, he only wants his own production associated with his name.

As fans across the world wait in agony for new music, there is still little speculation on when a new single or release will be debuted to the world, but knowing Porter – good things come to those who wait.

So Was Any of It Real?

To be clear: no, the track that circulated on May 1, 2017 was not a genuine Porter Robinson production. It was an imitation styled after the Worlds sound, and Porter shot it down himself almost immediately. The rumor got extra fuel from an earlier, separate incident that spring, when a server holding some of his old, unreleased demos from 2011-2014 was hacked and those tracks actually did leak online. That real leak is likely what made people so quick to believe this fake track was legit too — but the two situations were not the same thing, and this “new” track was a hoax, plain and simple.

The Actual Wait Was Worth It

As it turned out, Porter really was working on something in the background, he just wasn’t going to let a leak dictate his timeline. That patience paid off in a big way: after teasing a Virtual Self side-project in late 2017, he eventually returned under his own name with “Get Your Wish” in January 2020, followed by his second studio album, Nurture, in 2021. It capped off a nearly seven-year wait since Worlds and proved that, hoaxes aside, good things really do come to those who wait.
