ASOC WAREHOUSE – Brooklyn, NY Recap

Warehouse parties are not rare in Brooklyn and ASOC Warehouse this past weekend did not disappoint. Opening was Lestat who went on at 10pm followed by Breaux at 11. The venue was nearly at capacity by the time Ugly God got on stage. He performed some of his songs including “Water” when he decided to go for a little crowd surf.

That kind of lineup progression, from local openers into a viral rap moment into a headlining B2B, is exactly what makes these Brooklyn warehouse shows such a different animal from a standard club night or festival set. There’s no barricade separating the crowd from the stage the way there would be at a bigger venue, so when a performer like Ugly God decides to dive into the crowd, the whole room becomes part of the show instead of just watching it happen. Lestat and Breaux did the unglamorous but essential work of building the room’s energy up from scratch before the bigger names even touched the decks, and by the time Ugly God stepped up, the warehouse was already packed shoulder to shoulder.

Borgore and Carnage would be closing out the show with a B2B set but, not before they each played a set solo. Borgore played many of his songs including “Forbes” , “wildout” and many more. Carnage went on shortly after playing in front of nearly 5000 of his die hard fans. The crowd knew all his music from his oldest tracks to one of his newer unreleased tracks “XANMAN”. Fans stayed to the very end to watch both Carnage and Borgore play their well know tracks and make one of the best Warehouse shows Brooklyn has had in 2017.

Getting a crowd of that size to stick around start to finish, through two solo sets and then a full back to back, says a lot about how tight this bill was put together. Borgore and Carnage have both built careers on knowing exactly how to read a room, and pairing them together for the closing stretch meant the night ended on a back and forth of two producers pushing each other to go bigger rather than either one just phoning in a standard set. Debuting an unreleased track like “XANMAN” to a crowd that size and having them already locked in says plenty about how dialed in this specific fanbase is.
