53 Best New Artists Of 2016
With so many great artists coming out of the woodworks in 2016, it’s hard to pinpoint all of the year’s best up & coming/new artists.
Back in late December, we asked for your input and these were who you’ve voted for. This year’s poll collected votes from more than 18 countries including those of the United States, Belgium, Switzerland, Romania, Australia, Denmark, Canada and many more. So without further adieu, the results are in and you have voted Marshmello as this past year’s most up and coming and best new artist in 2016.
Despite gaining momentum in 2015, Marshmello took off in 2016 with the release of his self-released debut album. In addition to the success of the 10-song EP, Marshmello released “Alone” off of Monstercat Records and has risen to the top of the charts.
It’s genuinely wild to look back at how fast the masked producer’s 2016 came together. That debut album, Joytime, dropped self-released through his own Joytime Collective imprint back in January and still managed to land on iTunes’ top electronic albums chart on day one, eventually climbing to #5 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Then “Alone” hit Monstercat a few months later and just kept building steam all year, becoming the song most people associate with Marshmello’s breakout. Little did anyone voting in this poll know that track had even more life left in it — years later it would surge back up the Billboard Hot 100 after a certain battle royale game gave it a second wind, but that’s a story for a different year-end list.
What made 2016 such a fun year for new talent is that Marshmello wasn’t operating in a vacuum. Producers from all over the world were putting out tracks that got fans across 18-plus countries fired up enough to show up and vote, which is exactly why this list ended up so stacked. Whether it’s future bass, trap, house, or whatever genre-defying lane an artist decided to carve out for themselves, 2016 proved there’s always a fresh wave of talent ready to take over the scene.
