Earlier this year, many people from the dance music community believed the rumors that Marshmello’s true identity was that of Martin Garrix. The theory was debunked when both DJs were spotted at different New Year’s Eve parties and many people now believe Marshmello to be Dotcom after all.

Now it appears that Martin Garrix and Marshmello may have something in the works together. Both DJs who seem to be at the height of their career may be collaborating on a new project.

On Twitter, Marshmello reached out to Martin Garrix to say “let’s make that song,” in which Martin Garrix replied by saying “lets do it!””

For a little more context on the identity rumor: fans latched onto the theory partly because Marshmello and Martin Garrix share a manager and have been close friends and tourmates for years, which made the masked-DJ mystery even juicier at the time. That “Dotcom” name floating around wasn’t random either — it eventually lined up with later reporting that identified Marshmello’s real identity as producer Christopher Comstock, who had previously released music under the Dotcom alias before adopting the marshmallow-headed persona.

As for whether the actual collaboration ever happened — as far as we can track down, no official studio single credited to both Martin Garrix and Marshmello was ever released following this 2016 exchange. That said, the chemistry teased in these tweets did eventually show up on a stage: the two linked up for a back-to-back DJ set at Red Rocks years later, nearly a decade after promising fans “let’s do it,” giving longtime followers of this saga at least some payoff even if a studio track never materialized.

It’s a pretty fun case study in how these things play out in real time online — two friends joking around in the replies, fans immediately theorizing about a full collaboration, and then years of radio silence before anything resembling a payoff shows up. Dance music Twitter loved this exchange back in 2016, and honestly, it’s still a fun one to look back on now that we know how the identity rumor actually shook out.

We’ll keep you updated if “that song” Marshmello and Martin Garrix teased back in 2016 ever actually surfaces as an official release.
