When Skrillex and Diplo formed Jack Ü, we knew it was going to be a big couple of years for dance music.

After the success of Jack Ü’s debut album, Skrillex and Diplo took home a number of Grammys at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording and went 3X Platinum status for their collaborative single with Justin Bieber for “Where Are U Now.” Jack Ü continued the hype by performing at some of the year’s biggest music festivals in the world.

Now on June 22nd, The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has formally announced that Jack Ü’s mixtape has sold over 500,000 units and received the Gold certification.

It’s a milestone that’s been a long time coming. “Skrillex & Diplo Present Jack Ü” originally dropped back in February 2015 as a surprise release, and in the year and a half since, it’s kept climbing — reported sales figures had the project comfortably past the 500,000 threshold, with some counts putting it closer to 568,000 copies by the time the certification came through. For a mixtape-style project from two producers who built their reputations on genre-hopping and festival sets rather than radio singles, that’s a genuinely massive number, and it underlines just how far Jack Ü’s crossover appeal reached — a reach “Where Are Ü Now” in particular is responsible for, with Bieber’s involvement pulling in pop listeners who might never have pressed play on a Skrillex or Diplo record otherwise.

The RIAA’s Gold threshold covers combined sales and streaming-equivalent units, meaning the certification reflects not just people buying the album outright but the sheer volume of streams “Where Are Ü Now,” “To Ü,” and the rest of the project racked up in the months since release — a reminder of how quickly streaming was reshaping what “success” looked like for an album in the mid-2010s.

It’s worth remembering the mixtape landed as a surprise, no-warning release back in February 2015 — a format Skrillex and Diplo were both already comfortable with individually, but which made the album’s eventual sales run even more impressive, since there was no lengthy rollout or single cycle building anticipation ahead of time. Gold certifications for a project released with that little fanfare are relatively rare, and it says a lot about the strength of the songs themselves that people kept coming back to it more than a year later.
