3LAU Responds To Wolfgang Gartner’s AMA

Yesterday Wolfgang Gartner took to Reddit for an Ask Me Anything to discuss music production, touring, “EDM,” Beatport Top 10 and what appears his criticism on 3LAU. While the original post on Reddit has been deleted, we do have screenshots from both 3LAU’s response on Reddit as well as a screenshot of what we believe to be from his Facebook (which also has been removed).
AMAs on r/EDM tend to get chaotic fast, especially when they’re hosted by an artist as outspoken as Wolfgang Gartner, who has never shied away from sharing his opinions on the genre’s commercial direction. Somewhere in the thread, the conversation drifted from questions about his production process and touring schedule into far more personal territory, and that’s where things escalated into the drama below.
The comment that got 3LAU upset came from the reddit user “aedgar777” who wrote “3LAU is a joke. I think you’re just the man to end that charlatan’s career” in which Wolfgang replied “thanks. me too.” While this image appeared to be photoshopped, if you take a look at the first screenshot you’ll see a response from Justin3lau saying “not really sure what merits this statement, as you know absolutely nothing about me.”

According to a follow-up report from Your EDM, the whole thing was eventually traced back to the “aedgar777” comment being edited after the fact to insert 3LAU’s name into a statement that originally had nothing to do with him. Once that came to light, both 3LAU and Wolfgang Gartner reportedly deleted their respective comments and the back-and-forth was put to rest. It’s a decent reminder of how fast Reddit threads can spiral once screenshots start making the rounds, sometimes the “drama” says more about how easy a comment is to manipulate than about any real beef between two artists.
Both artists were established names in the scene at the time, 3LAU had already built a following through his bootleg remixes and original productions, while Wolfgang Gartner was known as much for his outspoken commentary on the industry as for his production work. That combination, a well-known artist’s blunt Reddit answers plus a screenshot that looked damning at first glance, was basically a recipe for exactly this kind of misunderstanding to spread fast before anyone had the full context.
Stories like this one are a useful case study in why it’s worth waiting for confirmation before taking a viral screenshot at face value, especially when the original source has already been deleted by the time most people see it circulating.
