Why The BBC Radio 1 Minimix Format Was Such A Big Deal
Getting a minimix slot on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show was a genuine milestone for any dance producer in the UK scene, it’s one of the most listened-to dance music radio programs in the world, and a tight, well-sequenced 6-minute mix was basically an audition in front of a massive national audience. Packing 29 samples into that short a window meant every transition had to land instantly, there was no room for a slow build the way there is in a full-length DJ set.
The track selection here also shows off some real range and crate-digging chops, pulling from disco-era classics (Prince, Michael McDonald), UK garage and house staples (Hardrive’s “Deep Inside,” Blackbox), and current-at-the-time dance-pop crossovers (the Ellie Goulding and Bastille remixes) all in the same mix. Russ Chimes weaving four of his own original productions and remixes into that same flow, right alongside foundational tracks by acts like Daft Punk, is a confident way to put his own material in direct conversation with the records that clearly shaped his sound.
