Morgan Page – In The Air – Episode 103

On my trip to Vegas this past weekend I made a sick ass mix of all of the latest new songs, but after a few different songs I figured, why did I just not put on Morgan Page’s newest In The Air mixtape. If you’re lazy like I was, enjoy this hour long track. Avicii’s “Superlove” kills it!

A Lenny Kravitz Remix Opening A Dance Mix Was A Bold Choice

Kicking an hour-long dance mix off with an Avicii remix of a Lenny Kravitz song is a pretty unusual programming choice, and it says something about where Avicii’s remix work was heading right before he broke through as a solo hitmaker in his own right. Reworking a well-known rock artist for a dance-floor audience takes real confidence — you’re betting the crowd trusts the mix enough to stick with an unfamiliar flip instead of bailing for something more obviously “EDM.” Morgan Page leading with it here suggests he had faith fans would follow, and given how well “In The Air” mixes tended to hold attention start to finish, that bet usually paid off.

The rest of the tracklist doubles as a nice snapshot of mid-2012 progressive house — Nicky Romero, Steve Angello, and Knife Party’s “Rage Valley” (which had just come out days earlier) all sitting side by side with a Justin Bieber remix, which tells you how blurry the line between pop and dance music was getting by this point. Radio-style mix shows like “In The Air” were one of the main ways fans actually discovered which new pop remixes and bootlegs were worth caring about before algorithmic playlists took over that job — a DJ with good ears curating an hour of the freshest cuts was basically the Spotify Discover Weekly of 2012, except with way more personality and, in this case, a genuinely great excuse not to make your own Vegas mix from scratch.
