Tiesto Is Returning To Trance Music in 2020
It had been joked about for years — every interview, every Reddit thread, every festival season: would Tiësto ever return to trance? In July 2020, the answer finally arrived. The DJ and producer officially announced his new alias VER:WEST, a dedicated trance project, revealed through a characteristically cryptic pair of tweets.
On July 17th, 2020, Tiësto released the debut VER:WEST single “5 Seconds Before Sunrise” through Musical Freedom’s sub-label AFTR:HRS.

Why This Was a Big Deal
To understand the excitement, you have to remember what Tiësto meant to trance. Before he was a Vegas residency titan and pop-radio fixture, Tijs Verwest was the genre’s global ambassador: the In Search of Sunrise compilation series, the Magik mixes, “Adagio for Strings,” three consecutive years atop the DJ Mag Top 100, and the era-defining moment of performing at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympics — the first DJ ever to do so. VER:WEST is simply his surname, Verwest, split with a colon — a signal that this wasn’t a side experiment but something personal, the man behind the brand revisiting the music that made him. Even the debut single’s title, “5 Seconds Before Sunrise,” read as a knowing wink to the In Search of Sunrise legacy.
The Music Itself
Notably, “5 Seconds Before Sunrise” wasn’t a nostalgia rehash. Rather than recreating 138 BPM anthems from 2003, the VER:WEST sound leaned into a modern, melodic, progressive interpretation of trance — patient, atmospheric, and built for deep listening as much as peak-time play. The reception across the dance community was warmly positive: longtime fans heard the DNA of classic Tiësto, while the production sat comfortably alongside the contemporary melodic wave. Tiësto would continue to revisit the alias in the years that followed with additional VER:WEST material and dedicated sets, maintaining it as his creative outlet for the deeper side of his musical identity.
