Diplo Reveals That The Next Major Lazer Album Will Be Their Last

As Diplo continues to work on new projects, such as Silk City with Mark Ronson, and LSD with Labrinth and Sia, Diplo is preparing a means to an end for his Major Lazer project. With 2018 marking 10 years of Major Lazer, the group has celebrated billions of streams online, countless awards, and major recognition in the scene.

During an interview with Complex, Diplo shared that there will be a ton of new content coming from the trio over the next year. Diplo revealed that the upcoming Major Lazer album will feature “a bunch of stuff you haven’t heard like that we made the last ten years. Next year marks our last album, so we got a lot of stuff in between now and then.”

It’s a lot to take in if you’ve been following Major Lazer since the beginning. What started as a Diplo and Switch side project in 2008 turned into one of the biggest acts in dance music, with Diplo, Walshy Fire, and Jillionaire racking up global hits together over the following decade. The group’s 2015 single “Lean On,” featuring MØ and DJ Snake, is a legitimate cultural milestone — it went on to become Spotify’s most-streamed song of all time at one point, and it’s still one of the most-viewed music videos on YouTube. That’s the kind of run Diplo is talking about walking away from.

And to be fair, Diplo’s plate really is full. Silk City, his project with Mark Ronson, would go on to win the Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2019 for “Electricity” alongside Dua Lipa, while LSD (with Sia and Labrinth) released its self-titled debut album that same year. It’s hard to argue with a guy spreading himself across that many hit-making projects at once.

Editor’s update: For anyone reading this years later — the “last album” prediction didn’t quite hold up. Major Lazer went on to release their fourth studio album, Music Is the Weapon, in October 2020, and as of this writing the group is still touring, under the Major Lazer Soundsystem banner with Diplo, Walshy Fire, and Ape Drums (who stepped in for Jillionaire in the lineup). Never say never in this industry.
