Deadmau5 Announces New EP To Be Released On July 13
mau5trap’s head honcho deadmau5 has been busier than ever. After developing his LAN/gaming center in Canada and creating his own video game, the DJ and producer is also working on new music to be released in just a short time.
On July 13th, Deadmau5 plans to release his latest work titled mau5ville: Level 1. The 8-song EP will include collaborations from GTA, Getter, and Rob Swire.
Deadmau5 clarified that his collaboration with Rob Swire on “Monophobia” on the EP will include the original mix, an extended mix, a remix from Rinzen, an extended remix from Latroit, and a remix from ATTLAS.
mau5ville: Level 1 is really the start of a new project for deadmau5 more than it’s a standalone EP. He’s billed it as the first in a series of “level” compilations released under the mau5trap banner, essentially turning the imprint’s roster loose to show off what the label’s been sitting on. Rob Swire — Pendulum and Knife Party’s frontman and a longtime collaborator of deadmau5’s going back to tracks like “Ghosts N Stuff” — finally delivering “Monophobia” is a genuinely big deal for fans who’ve been waiting on new deadmau5-and-Swire material for years, and stacking it with three separate remixes (Rinzen, Latroit, and ATTLAS all taking their own pass at it) means the track gets a full life across peak-time sets, techno rooms, and everything in between.
GTA and Getter round out the rest of the tracklist with their own cuts, giving the EP a pretty wide stylistic range for something billed as a single release — you’ve got deadmau5’s signature progressive/techno sensibility next to GTA’s harder trap-leaning bass work and Getter’s chaotic, bass-music-adjacent production, all coexisting on the same eight-track project. That kind of curveball sequencing is very on-brand for mau5trap, a label that’s never been shy about throwing genres together if the artists are good enough to pull it off.
The timing also isn’t an accident. deadmau5 has been on an absolute tear in 2018 — between building out a LAN/gaming center back home in Canada, developing his own video game, and dropping a fully orchestral reinterpretation of his catalog, mau5ville: Level 1 is proof he hasn’t taken his foot off the gas in the studio either. It’s a lot of output for one year from one artist, and it’s the kind of stretch that reminds people why mau5trap has stayed one of the more interesting labels in electronic music for over a decade.
