New Music Friday, March 30: The Weeknd, Steve Aoki, Seven Lions
Following Swedish House Mafia’s reunion at Ultra Music Festival 2018, the music industry is alive and well. As we near Coachella and all of the other music festivals for 2018, many of today’s biggest dance artists are gearing up with their main stage music. Today we are proud to present New Music Friday for March 30th.
That Swedish House Mafia moment is still the story of the week. The trio hadn’t shared a stage together in over five years, and their surprise appearance during Ultra’s Miami weekend sent the entire dance music internet into meltdown mode. It felt like the right kind of chaos to kick off a Friday that’s also stacked with new music, right as the festival calendar starts ramping up toward Coachella and the rest of the spring/summer run.
Speaking of stacked, today’s list is a good one. The Weeknd’s entry, “My Dear Melancholy,” actually isn’t just a single, it’s a full surprise six-track EP, and it’s a noticeably darker, moodier turn for him compared to his more recent pop-leaning work. He pulled in some serious production names for it too, including Frank Dukes and Gesaffelstein, plus a feature from Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. It ended up debuting at number one on the Billboard 200, so clearly the darker direction resonated.
Elsewhere on the list, Seven Lions and Jason Ross link up again on “Ocean,” continuing a collaborative streak between the two that fans of the melodic bass and dubstep world have been all over. Wolfgang Gartner keeps the electro house flame burning with “Ching Ching,” while Au/Ra and CamelPhat’s “Panic Room” brings a moodier deep house energy to the mix. Steve Aoki and LOOPERS team up on “Pika Pika,” and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike close things out with “The House of House,” a title that pretty much tells you exactly what you’re getting.
