Don Diablo Spurs More Swedish House Mafia Rumors At Ultra 2018
With only hours to go until Ultra Music Festival officially kicks off, the rumors are flying about who is going to headline this year’s music festival. With Hardwell, Proximity, and other music industry professionals fueling the hype, there’s truly a chance that Swedish House Mafia will make their return at Ultra Music Festival 2018.
Just hours ago, the DJ and producer Don Diablo tweeted out “I wonder if SHM will be playing a new song when they play Ultra this weekend.” While Don Diablo may be reacting to the rumor mill, Don Diablo may have an inside view of this year’s festival.

Update: the rumor mill turned out to be spot on. Swedish House Mafia — Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello — made a surprise reunion appearance at Ultra Music Festival 2018 on March 25th, closing out the festival’s main stage for its 20th anniversary and marking their first time performing together in five years since their “farewell” at Ultra back in 2013. They opened with their signature anthem “Miami 2 Ibiza,” and word of the reunion had been building for hours beforehand, with simplified SHM logos popping up around Miami and friends and collaborators of the group teasing it on Instagram earlier that day.
It’s worth being clear about what that Ultra set actually was, though, versus what came later. The Ultra 2018 appearance was a surprise one-off reunion moment rather than a full-blown comeback with new music attached. The real “we’re officially back” confirmation, complete with talk of new music, didn’t land until months afterward, with SHM properly teasing their return around May 2018 and then making it official that October. The group’s full reunion tour didn’t actually kick off until 2019.
So Don Diablo’s tweet wasn’t wrong, exactly, it was just a little ahead of the fuller story. SHM did show up at Ultra that weekend just like he suggested, even if the “new song” part of his question ended up being more about the years-long comeback arc than anything they debuted on that specific Miami stage. Considering Don Diablo has always run in the same circles as Axwell, Ingrosso, and Angello, it’s a good bet he had a better read on what was coming than most of the fans speculating alongside him that week.
