Avicii Receives An Official Remix From Alan Walker On ‘Lonely Together’

Avicii returning in 2017 was one of the biggest stories of the year. The artist took over a year off from production entirely to focus on himself, and when he returned he was better than ever. The standout track of his grand return was ‘Lonely Together’. Today Avicii has released a compilation of official remixes for the song and Alan Walker was obviously the largest name to be featured.
Alan Walker‘s edit of the song was definitely minimal. This is almost as expected. Avicii is a legend in music and Alan had a massive task at reworking one of his biggest hits, he most likely wanted to play it safe and produce a solid, status quo remix. There is absolutely noting wrong with the tune, but unfortunately it does not really stand out in anyway. Check it out below.
‘Lonely Together’ itself, which features vocals from Rita Ora, arrived as part of Avicii’s celebrated comeback after he stepped back from the demands of touring to focus on his health and well-being. The track quickly became one of the most talked-about singles of his return, and an official remix pack was a natural next step given how much attention the song had already picked up on radio and streaming. Rounding out Alan Walker as the marquee name on the remix package made plenty of sense – his own breakout hit ‘Faded’ had made him one of the most streamed artists in dance music at the time, and pairing two of the genre’s biggest names on one release was always going to draw eyes.
As for the remix itself, “minimal” really is the right word for it. Walker leans on his signature moody, atmospheric production style, keeping the core melody and Rita Ora’s vocal largely intact rather than reworking the arrangement from the ground up. It’s a respectful, faithful take rather than a bold reinterpretation, which tracks with the reasoning above – when you’re remixing a song from an artist of Avicii’s stature, there’s a real incentive to not mess with what’s already working. Some fans will appreciate that restraint, while others going in expecting a full Alan Walker-style transformation might come away wanting a bit more of his own fingerprint on the track. Either way, it’s a solid listen and a fitting addition to the remix pack alongside whatever other reworkings made the cut.
Give it a spin above and let us know what you think of Walker’s approach compared to the original.
