Kygo Gets Real Funky In New Single ‘Riding Shotgun’
Kygo has continually been raising the bar for all musicians who fall under the umbrella of electronic dance music. This week he is doing something that not many have tried to do so far. Release a new single each day. Martin Garrix pulled it off last year during ADE but unfortunately many of those singles got lost in the sands of time. Kygo has none the less still decided to go with the episodic release of his new album. Today marks the 2nd single this week and it is a wonderfully funky tune known as ‘Riding Shotgun’.
The new single features the soulful vocals of Bonnie Mckee and appears to be a collaborative effort with Oliver Nelson. Oliver is based out of Sweden and has gotten some recognition in recent years for high profile remixes, like if official one he did for Kesha. ‘Riding Shotgun’ is full of catchy hooks and nostalgic lyrics. The track is a lot of fun to listen to. Particularly in the middle when Kygo infuses a bit more funk than we are familiar with when it comes to his originals. Overall this one will be a highlight of the new album.

“Riding Shotgun” Landed On Kygo’s “Kids In Love” Album
This whole daily-single rollout was building toward Kygo’s sophomore album, “Kids in Love,” which came together as one of the more ambitious release strategies we’d seen from a dance artist at that point. Rather than dropping one lead single and waiting months, Kygo used that steady drip of tracks, including “Riding Shotgun,” to keep fans locked in leading up to the full album drop.
Oliver Nelson has kept building his own catalog of collaborations since then, and Bonnie McKee has stayed busy as one of pop’s most reliable behind-the-scenes songwriters, having written hits for artists like Katy Perry over the years. “Riding Shotgun” holds up as one of the funkier, more playful cuts in Kygo’s catalog, a nice reminder that even when he’s working within tropical house’s usual sound palette, he’s not afraid to throw in a groove that stands out from the rest of his discography.
