Exclusive Interview – Lookas

Lookas is a name all of us in the EDM scene are very much familiar with. This guy has been around and has proven himself time and time again as one of the leading pioneers in bass music. This artist has been in the game for awhile and it seems like he his finally starting to come out of his apparent hiatus. Now it seems the talented producer/dj is coming back bigger and better than ever. I got to catch up with Lookas before he opened up for Adventure Club this past Saturday at Terminal 5 in NYC. In this interview we went into basically everything from what he's been been up to recently to his thoughts on the music scene today!

Interview:

-How's everything going with you?

“Everything is going really well. I just got back from a tour a little while ago, I was in Asia. Besides that I've just been working hard on the EP. I'm definitely ready to get all this music out there. I just dropped a new song called ‘Mercy' also. I've been sitting on that for awhile and I actually never played it out, but just recently we've been giving it a go at shows and just decided to release it. This is the first song I've released in a little over a year. The last song I put out was ‘Can't Get Enough'. This past year I kind of took a little hiatus to figure out what I wanted to do as an artist. I'm really excited to get back into it and for all the new things to come.”

-What do you think about New York? When was the last time you were here?

“The last time I think I was here was when I played at Webster Hall which was probably over a year ago. I love New York though, it is definitely a great market for me. I haven't really had a chance to dive into it that much and be able to do a dope show. But after the EP and everything comes out I am definitely trying to throw something big up here.”

-So tell me about this EP you have coming out.

“I've been working on the new EP for like 6 or 7 months. It was originally 5 tracks but then we brought it down to 3. I don't really have an exact release date for it yet but I do know that the plan is to release one track a month up until the release. The first track is a complete original by me. The second track is with Krewella and I'm truly excited about that one. They are seriously awesome girls and I really can't wait for it to come out. The third track is with my friend Able Heart.”

-What kind of style would you say your EP is geared towards?

“I would say I'm really just trying to combine all the styles of the music that I enjoy. I wanted to combine the music I like with the signature style that I have built up. I will say though that the last song of the EP is pretty unique. It's like R & B mixed with pop, mixed with EDM, with some Drake vibes added to it, and its really cool airy stuff that gets you in the feels. It is definitely some late night drive music but also goes hard with a heavy drop.”

-What festivals did you hit up this past summer? Which one was your favorite?

“The biggest festival that I played at this summer was probably Hard Summer in LA. I played an early slot at like 3 but despite that everyone still came out and it got really packed. It was an awesome festival and LA showed a lot of love. They always come through and go hard. They really show me a so much support in LA, really love it out there!”

-Any other songs besides what's going to be on the EP?

“I have a lot of songs that I'm sitting on. We're just trying to figure out the right plan for them. We have a song coming out after the EP with one of my friends from Timeflies. I feel like it's going to be a smash. I'm just really excited for everything to start moving quickly again. The fans are going to love it and I'm just really happy to finally get things rolling.”

-How do you feel about the scene today? And what direction do you think most artists are going?

“I think the biggest mistakes that artists make is that they are always trying to figure out what the next big thing is. You just kind of have to make new stuff and enjoy it. If you enjoy it that's really all that matters. That's the thing, for instance recently with the EP everything kind of flowed naturally and it worked. With these records we made it in one sitting and we walked out of the studio that night. I love everything and I hate categorizing genres, when you're a producer you just have to make a lot of music. Artists get caught up and make mistakes because they feel a need to to make this or that. You just have to make a record, even if its bad, you just have to keep going and keep working. Thats what being a producer is, always striving to be better.”

I hope you guys are as excited as I am for what's to come with this incredibly talented artist. With everything he has going on I'm sure there will be no stopping him from making some serious waves late into this year and beyond.
