It’s a pretty wild cross-section of pop, hip-hop, and dance when you actually look at it. Shazam’s chart doesn’t work like a streaming or sales chart – it’s built entirely off what people are actively pulling their phones out to identify, whether that’s a song playing on the radio, in a store, or blasting out of a car next to them at a red light. That makes it a genuinely different kind of temperature check on what’s cutting through in the real world, not just what’s already popular enough to stream on repeat.
Three EDM-rooted tracks cracking the top 10 in that environment is a solid showing. The Chainsmokers’ “Something Just Like This,” their massive team-up with Coldplay, sits comfortably at number four, proof that the duo’s crossover run from 2016 into 2017 wasn’t slowing down anytime soon. Kygo and Selena Gomez’s “It Ain’t Me” lands at six, riding Kygo’s signature tropical house production into pop radio territory the same way “Stole The Show” and “It Ain’t Me” itself had been doing since its release earlier in the year. And Calvin Harris rounds things out at eight with “Slide,” featuring Frank Ocean and Migos, off his star-studded Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 album – arguably the project that reintroduced Harris as a producer’s producer rather than just a festival-main-stage name.
Add in the fact that Despacito, HUMBLE., and Redbone were absolutely inescapable that week, and you’ve got a chart that captures a pretty specific moment in mid-2017 pop culture. Worth remembering next time someone tries to tell you EDM and mainstream radio don’t mix.
