During Weekend 1 Skrillex came out to help Anna Lunoe close out her set on the Sahara Stage but to call that a performance is a bit of a stretch. Last night though we got the full experience. Skrillex took control on the Do Lab stage and threw down new bangers to old classics like his remix of Cinema. For those wondering how this even happened, Skrillex reportedly swooped in to take over a set originally slated for divaDANIELLE at the Do Lab, stepping up at the 11:45pm slot on Saturday night. Anyone who’s spent time at the Do Lab knows it’s already one of the most intimate, high-energy corners of the entire festival grounds, so having the OWSLA boss show up unannounced and take the decks turned an already packed tent into an absolute frenzy. Word started spreading fast once fans realized who was actually behind the booth, and the crowd only got thicker as the set went on.
By all accounts it was a genuinely varied set too, not just a victory lap through the hits. Skrillex reportedly moved through everything from future house cuts to heavier bass material, blending in newer unreleased material alongside the classics longtime fans came for. The Cinema remix moment in particular seems to have been a highlight, mashing his own track together with a familiar melody in a way that had the whole tent singing along before the drop even hit.
It’s worth remembering this wasn’t Skrillex’s only Coachella cameo that year either.
