Slushii and Marshmello Drop Original Mix “Twinbow”
Newcomer, Slushii, has quickly climbed the ranks of EDM to cultivate a niche in the scene for himself. Building an immense fanbase, Slushii truly made a name for himself in 2016, and it appears he is riding that wave into 2017. After releasing a remix together, Slushii and Marshmello have teamed up once again to release “Twinbow” their original mix.
“Twinbow” incorporates aspects of both artists unique sounds. Opening up with a plucking melody punctured with drum beats, the song creates a whimsical aura. “Twinbow” is layered with synths, high-pitched vocals, and future bass drops. The song is nothing too heavy or overly unique, but it is injected with a certain emotion that makes it stand out amongst other recent releases. “Twinbow” dropped on March 17, 2017, and it ended up having some real staying power for a self-released collab track. The song picked up remix treatment from multiple corners of the bass music world in the months that followed — Jauz put his own spin on it that June, and by August, Drops (Marshmello’s own alter-ego project) had reworked it into something described as a “massive rework” of the original. That’s a pretty unusual amount of remix attention for a track that wasn’t even a label single, and it says a lot about how much traction Slushii and Marshmello had built up individually and together by that point in their careers.
It’s also worth remembering the context both artists were operating in at the time. Slushii was still very much the new kid on the block in early 2017, but he’d already built a reputation for a genre-blending, glitchy-yet-melodic future bass sound that stood apart from a lot of what was coming out of that scene. Marshmello, meanwhile, was in the middle of his meteoric rise, having spent 2016 and early 2017 releasing a steady stream of collaborations and solo cuts while keeping his identity behind the mask a mystery. Pairing up with Slushii for a second time (after an earlier remix collaboration) wasn’t just a one-off — it reflected a real creative chemistry between the two producers.
Listening back, “Twinbow” holds up as a solid snapshot of where future bass was heading in 2017: melodic, a little playful, built around vocal chops and pitched-up textures rather than pure aggression. It’s not the biggest song either artist ever put out, but for a track that started as just two friends messing around in the studio together, the amount of remix love it picked up over the following months says everything about how well it resonated with fans.
