We Were Fooled, That Was NOT A Marshmello Track
Across social media, many others, including ourselves here at EDM Sauce, were duped by what appeared to be Marshmello’s new track, “Walking Out.”
When we first listened to the song, we were surprised by how much it deviated from Marshmello’s other tracks. Something about the laid-back and melodic qualities didn’t quite click. We merely assumed Marshmello was taking a step back from his typical sound. But, just like countless other listeners, we assumed wrong.
It turned out that someone had been trying extremely hard to pass “Walking Out” off as a Marshmello track. Appearing under the artist’s name on both Spotify and iTunes, the song’s mysterious appearance baffled everyone – even the actual artist, Evix.
Evix, who actually released the song, titled “Wayt,” on Soundcloud, initially thought Marshmello was to blame. However, that was clearly not the case. Apparently, uploading songs under the wrong artist credit on major streaming platforms isn’t all that difficult, which left us all wondering who took the time and energy to make the swap. If it wasn’t Evix or Marshmello, who was it, and why?
Neither Evix nor Marshmello’s camp ever publicly named a culprit, and the mix-up was never definitively explained. What is clear is that “Wayt” is Evix’s song, start to finish – Marshmello had nothing to do with writing or producing it, and the mislabeling appears to have been some kind of upload-side error or prank rather than anything either artist orchestrated.

The Bigger Picture
Mislabeled or miscredited tracks like this weren’t unheard of on Spotify and iTunes’ more open upload pipelines during that era, and stories like Evix’s were a reminder of how easy it was for a smaller producer’s work to get lost in someone else’s shadow, even briefly. For Evix, a rising trap and future bass producer, the mix-up ended up putting “Wayt” – and his Soundcloud page – in front of a much wider audience than it otherwise would have reached, even if the attention came from a strange place. It’s a small case study in how chaotic music distribution could get once anyone was able to push a track out under nearly any artist name.
