English-born Canadian producer, musician, and DJ Richie Hawtin is starting to get recognized for a lot of things other than just his dance music. Most of his career has been a joyride through phenomenal acclaim including writing a track for the Winter Olympics and working on some incredible installations worldwide.
The University of Huddersfield gave him a doctorate recently for his “outstanding contribution to the world of music technology” and actor Sir Patrick Stewart happened to bestow the honor upon him. Stewart is a chancellor at the university and well-known actor from the region. You probably know him mostly from Stark Trek, X-Men, and other major films.
Houghton's work with CNTRL has been a big reason for his worldwide acclaim. It is a platform for education that has helped many develop their skills. CNTRL: BEYOND EDM is “an educational initiative, centred on electronic dance music (EDM), and comprising music production seminars, lessons in the music business and live music performances on a tour of North American universities.” He is one of the founding members with Ean Golden and Loco Dice.
Hawtin has received a few honors in 2015 and last year. He was given the award for “Outstanding Contribution to Music” last September by the Association for Independent Music… while also receiving the Sake Samurai Ward by the Sake Samurai Association at the Sinmogamo Shrine in Kyoto, Japan.
The CNTRL campus in the United States is teaching business of electronic music and other skills to kids including production and technology lectures. Find more info here.
