This tropical house sensation has been sweeping the country lately and fans have been embracing the exposure this genre has received over the past year.
Last weekend Norwegian producer, Matoma stopped off in San Diego on his nationwide Midnight Sun tour at Bang Bang for a sold out show. The 23 year old has been making strides lately crafting popular remixes of hip-hop moguls such as, Eminem and The Notorious BIG adding a melodic tropical house infused spin to a wide variety of genres he revamps.
I was a little skeptical myself about seeing tropical house live in action, as the genre itself is a little more laid back than most and I questioned whether this would work for a club setting, somewhere where people crave the usual big room heavy drops and kicks sound rather than what Tommie Sunshine has labeled, “lullaby music”.
Matoma successfully was able to play some of his classic remixes, such as his rendition of Imagine Dragons, “It's Time” and kept the energy at high levels throughout the entire set. It was an obvious change from the openers who had been playing more deeper darker house and suddenly a little before 12 the room lit up with melodic tropical house sounds.
Throughout the night he changed up his set a bit playing some more diverse genres and even threw in a throwback classic dropping Dada Life's “Kick Out the Epic Motherf*****” that had the crowd going wild.
Overall, the set was crafted well to meet the audience's needs and Matoma did an amazing job at keeping the energy levels up all night, which is particularly difficult to do with a genre like tropical house. He seemed to be having a good time and enjoyed playing for the crowd. You can catch him on the next leg of his tour stopping in New York and LA this weekend.
