Brodinski, Tiesto, Martin Garrix Become Newest BBC Radio 1 Residents
BBC Radio 1’s Residency slot has long been one of the most coveted placements in dance music broadcasting — it’s the station’s way of handing over serious real estate to the DJs it thinks matter most, and landing one used to mean you’d already proven yourself on “In New DJ’s We Trust,” the audition-style segment the Residency slot eventually grew out of. So when the four newest names were announced in March 2014, it was a real signal of where Radio 1 saw the genre heading.
Simon Patterson, Tiesto, Brodinski and Martin Garrix are BBC Radio 1’s newest resident DJs taking over the airwaves from Steve Angello, George Fitzgerald, James Blake and more. The 4 music producers and DJs will take over their new residency which incorporates two shows on a Thursday night, 9-10pm and 12midnight-2am.
“Tiësto will start his Radio 1 Residency on 24 April and Martin Garrix will join on 1 May – both will showcase the best in electronic dance music.”

BBC Radio 1’s 9-10pm Residency slot was previously known as In New DJ’s We Trust.
It’s worth noting just how different these four residents’ trajectories were at the time. Tiësto was already a veteran with “Club Life,” reportedly the most downloaded dance music podcast in the world, giving him a built-in audience before he even touched the Radio 1 slot. Martin Garrix, on the other hand, was the new kid on the block — barely 17 years old and riding the massive wave of “Animals,” which had just become one of the biggest tracks in the world and made him one of Radio 1’s most prominent teenage tastemakers; Garrix himself has said Radio 1 was one of the earliest taste-making supporters of that record. Brodinski brought a techno and bass-leaning European club sound to the mix, while Simon Patterson represented trance. Together, the four-DJ, two-slot format gave Radio 1 listeners a genuinely wide cross-section of what dance music sounded like heading into the summer of 2014.
