Right now, Soundcloud has an estimated 20 million users and is growing at the rate of 1.5 million users per month. Even more astonishing, Soundcloud users are adding about 24 hours of New Music every 2 minutes.
Although the website was originally created for musicians to upload their own recordings, the platform has arguably become the “Youtube of music” and is heavily used for podcasts, music promotion and music discovery. With such a low barrier to entry, anyone in the world can sign up, share their music, comment and listen, all ad-fee. The platform has most certainly made the biggest impact on EDM, where many artists have made their careers by sharing their music.
Soundcloud has certainly changed over the years and continues evolve after half a decade. This year alone, Soundcloud has totally revamped their premium subscription and integrated with Instagram, allowing artists to connect their Instagram photos with their Soundcloud account. In an interview with TechCrunch, CEO Alexander Ljung said, “We’ve had a really good year, we’ve been growing very fast — we are the audio platform of the web.” As the company grows, lets all hope that the EDM community continues to reap the benefits of this technology.
