Vicetone

Vicetone is the Dutch production duo of Ruben den Boer and Victor Pool, two guys from Groningen who’ve spent over a decade proving that melodic electronic music doesn’t have to be corny to hit hard. They came up the classic bedroom-producer way, grinding out remixes and originals until Spinnin’ Records and later Monstercat took notice, and their sound has always leaned into big, emotional melodies without losing the energy that makes a festival crowd actually move.

Here’s a fun wrinkle in their story: Vicetone’s biggest cultural moment technically happened years after the song came out. Their 2014 remix of Tony Igy’s “Astronomia” blew up in 2020 as the soundtrack to the viral “Ghanaian pallbearers dancing” meme, a genuinely bizarre way for a dance duo to hit mainstream internet consciousness, but it introduced their name to millions of people who’d never heard of Vicetone before. That’s on top of a catalog full of legitimate dancefloor and radio hits, including “Nevada” with Cozi Zuehlsdorff and the Aurora EP, both of which built their reputation as melodic bass and electro house go-tos through the mid-2010s.

Vicetone landed on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs list multiple times, cracking the top 40 in 2014, and their remix work has crossed paths with some serious names, including Hardwell, Tiësto, The Weeknd, and Daft Punk. In 2021 they finally put out their debut full-length album, Legacy, on Monstercat, a project years in the making that pulled together their signature emotional builds and widescreen production into one cohesive statement. They followed it up with tracks like “Barcelona Nights” and “Always Running,” keeping their sound moving forward instead of resting on old hits.

What’s kept Vicetone relevant this long is that den Boer and Pool never chased a single sound too hard. They’ve dipped into future bass, electro house, and straight-up pop-leaning dance music, always filtered through that same melodic instinct.
