Minnesota has spent more than a decade as one of American bass music’s most respected sound designers, the kind of producer other artists point to when they want to explain what heavy, textured dubstep is supposed to feel like. He launched the project back in 2011 and quickly built a reputation for deep, distorted low end paired with melodic, almost cinematic production choices, a combination that made him stand out in a scene that can sometimes lean toward one extreme or the other. His track “HiLow” on Wakaan, the label run by Liquid Stranger that’s become a home base for the modern bass underground, is a good example of that signature style: heavy enough to move a festival crowd, detailed enough to reward a pair of headphones.

Minnesota built his following the old-fashioned way, through relentless touring and a catalog that kept evolving rather than chasing whatever bass music trend was hot that year. Fans in the scene have long connected with the emotional, almost organic quality of his sound design, something that set him apart from producers leaning purely on aggression.

This year brought a major turning point for the project. Minnesota announced “Out of the Void,” a 24-date farewell tour running from early February through late April, closing out in San Francisco and hitting major markets like Las Vegas, Chicago, and Austin along the way. The announcement confirmed he’s retiring the Minnesota moniker after more than a decade of building it into one of bass music’s most trusted names.

But like a lot of artists closing one chapter, Minnesota made it clear this isn’t the end of his career, just the end of this particular name. He’s said he’ll keep making music under a new alias, staying in electronic music but shifting the sound to whatever feels most like him at this point in his artistic journey. In his own words, he’s both excited and a little scared about starting that next thing, which is a pretty honest way to describe a rebrand after ten-plus years of building a brand from scratch.

For now, the “Out of the Void” tour stands as a proper send-off for one of bass music’s most consistent and respected names, and fans are already watching closely for whatever comes next under his new project.
