Illenium

If there’s one artist who turned “emotional” into a genre unto itself, it’s Illenium. Born Nicholas Miller in Downers Grove, Illinois, he started messing around with production back in 2008, but the real lightbulb moment hit in summer 2012 when he caught Bassnectar at Red Rocks. That night basically rewired his brain — he moved to Denver in 2013 and never looked back, building the melodic bass sound that’s now his signature: huge, cinematic drops wrapped around lyrics that actually hit you in the chest.

Illenium doesn’t really do “just another EDM song.” His tracks lean hard into heartbreak, nostalgia, and euphoria all at once, blending future bass, dubstep, and straight-up pop songwriting into something that feels more like a diary entry than a festival set. That formula turned him into one of dance music’s biggest crossover names.

The Albums

His debut Ashes dropped in 2016, followed by Awake in 2017, which gave us “Feel Good” and “Crawl Outta Love.” Then came Ascend in 2019 — his first record to hit #1 on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart — packed with hits like “Good Things Fall Apart” with Jon Bellion and “Takeaway” with The Chainsmokers and Lennon Stella. Fallen Embers followed in 2021 and landed him his first Grammy nomination. He kept the streak going with a self-titled album in 2023, featuring a genre-bending team-up with Spiritbox on “Shivering.”

Illenium’s also become a go-to collaborator way outside the EDM lane, working with names like Avril Lavigne, Travis Barker, and Tom DeLonge, plus remixing artists like Taylor Swift, Halsey, and Flume. He’s not staying in one box, and honestly that’s the point.

2026 might be his biggest swing yet. In September 2025 he announced Odyssey, his sixth studio album, alongside a nine-night residency at the Las Vegas Sphere built around it — described as a “neo-space opera” of a show. The album dropped February 6, 2026 via Republic Records with features from Ellie Goulding, Kid Cudi, and more, giving fans a whole new chapter of the Illenium universe to dive into.

From a Colorado bedroom producer to headlining one of the most technologically insane venues on Earth, Illenium’s whole run has been proof that melodic bass can be massive and still feel personal. That’s rare in this scene, and it’s exactly why he’s stuck around.
