Carl Cox

Carl Cox doesn’t need much of an introduction, but here’s the short version anyway: the man is basically techno itself. Born in Oldham, England, Cox fell in love with disco and Chicago house as a teenager, and by the late ’80s he was already a fixture of the UK’s fledgling rave scene, tearing through sets at legendary parties like Sunrise. That’s actually where he earned his nickname, the “Three-Deck Wizard,” for pulling off three-turntable mixing at a time when most DJs could barely handle two. Nobody else was doing that. It set the tone for a career built on pushing gear and technique further than anyone thought necessary.

From there Cox just kept building. He’s spent decades blending vinyl, CDJs, MIDI keyboards and drum machines into hybrid live sets that feel more like real-time remixing than a standard DJ set. He co-founded Intec Digital and Awesome Soundwave, two labels that have shaped techno’s sound for years, and he’s been the face of Ultra Music Festival’s RESISTANCE stage since 2005. That stage has grown into one of the biggest rooms at Ultra, and it’s become a launching pad in its own right, with artists who cut their teeth there going on to headline Ultra’s main stage.

What makes Cox stand out even now, more than five decades into a career, is that he still treats every gig like it matters. In 2025, after nine years away, he returned to Ibiza with a new residency at UNVRS, the venue that used to be Privilege Club. He’s talked about turning down easier, more lucrative bookings over the years because he didn’t want to just be a “DJ gun for hire.” That’s the whole ethos in one sentence: artistic integrity over showing up and cashing a check.

Outside the booth, Cox has built out a life around things he genuinely loves, including his own Carl Cox Motor Sport brand, which fits the guy who’s always been more obsessed with the craft than the fame. He’s also become something of an elder statesman for dance music, someone artists and fans alike point to when they want to talk about what longevity in this industry actually looks like.

Five decades in, Carl Cox is still one of the most respected names in electronic music, not because of a single hit or a viral moment, but because he’s shown up, evolved, and kept the crowd moving through disco, acid house, rave, and techno’s every era since. Few artists in any genre can say that.
