JK. Crazy part. Y’all believed me for a second. With hundreds of thousands of people set to “storm Area 51”, Diplo took to Twitter to feed into the latest fad.

Let’s take a minute to appreciate how bonkers this is. Like legit crazy. You realize what is going to happen, right? The Air Force is legit going to wipe you off the face of the planet. Dead ass. Whether you believe in extra-terrestrials or not, stay the fuck home. Go watch Invader Zim or some shit. The Air Force, believe it or not, is a pretty serious thing. Like, they have plans, drones, drop nuclear bombs… I know, crazy concept. Now let’s take a step back, that all changes if Diplo is serious about playing the “Area 51 Stage”. I mean, the dude does play every main stage out there. So could it be? Nah, y’all are crazy.
Wait, What Even Was “Storm Area 51”?
For anyone reading this later and wondering what the hell we’re talking about, “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us” was a joke Facebook event created in the summer of 2019, encouraging people to raid the top-secret Air Force base in Nevada to “see them aliens.” It went viral almost instantly, with millions of people RSVPing, even though basically nobody actually planned to storm a military base. Diplo’s tweet was him doing exactly what half of Twitter was doing that week, riffing on a meme that had taken over the internet.
The joke got so big that it eventually spawned a real, much smaller event called Alienstock, held in the tiny town of Rachel, Nevada, near the base’s entrance, around when the original raid was supposedly planned for September 20, 2019. The Air Force even publicly warned people not to actually try it, and briefly caused a stir with a threatening tweet of its own that it later had to walk back. In the end, only a modest crowd showed up in the Nevada desert, nobody stormed anything, and no aliens were liberated.
As for Diplo, no, he did not actually play an “Area 51 Stage.” There was no such stage. He was just having fun with the rest of the internet during one of 2019’s most bizarre viral moments, and honestly, it’s a pretty good bit.
