Diplo Does Pizza Review With Barstool Sports To Promote Upcoming Mad Decent Block Party

Dave Portnoy, founder of website Barstool Sports does daily pizza reviews that rack up hundreds of thousands of views each day. Usually, he does them solo but sometimes he will get a celebrity or athlete to join in, and who do you think the 1st electronic artist to join Portnoy was? You guessed it. Diplo.
Barstool’s “One Bite” pizza review series had already turned Portnoy into a bit of an internet institution by 2019, with athletes, comedians, and rappers lining up to sit across from him and get graded on a slice. Getting an electronic artist in that chair was a first for the dance music world, and Diplo — never one to shy away from a crossover moment — was the perfect guy to break that seal.
Diplo joined Portnoy in New York City to do a pizza review with him as well as promote his upcoming Mad Decent Block Party at Gillette Stadium on July 20th & 21st. Check out the 4 minute video below including a pretty funny story about a party involving Diplo and Portnoy’s cameraman.
Mad Decent Block Party has been a staple on Diplo’s calendar for years, growing out of his Mad Decent record label into one of the more eclectic touring festival brands in dance music, mixing trap, moombahton, and bass-heavy house with the kind of lineup surprises Diplo is known for. Bringing that promo tour to Barstool’s audience made a lot of sense — it’s a built-in crowd of young, engaged fans who might not otherwise stumble across a Mad Decent flyer, and Diplo has never been shy about chasing new audiences outside the typical festival bubble.
The pizza review itself plays out about how you’d expect: Portnoy sizes up the slice with his usual blunt commentary while Diplo cracks jokes and, according to the clip, gets into a story about a wild party involving one of Portnoy’s own cameramen. It’s a low-stakes, funny watch, and it’s the kind of unscripted content that tends to humanize artists who otherwise only show up on stage behind a mixer.
It’s a small crossover in the grand scheme of things, but it’s also a pretty good snapshot of how far dance music had pushed into mainstream internet culture by 2019 — DJs weren’t just playing festivals anymore, they were popping up in the same content ecosystem as pro athletes and comedians. Whether or not the pizza scored well, Diplo walked away with a solid plug for Mad Decent Block Party and a genuinely funny video to show for it.
