The Chainsmokers Reveal Several New Collaborations With Juice WRLD Are Coming Soon

The Chainsmokers have been steadily teasing the release of new music since 2019 kicked off. After a monster year where The Chainsmokers grew with every release, 2019 looks to be even brighter than the landmark years which now lie in the past.

One thing that helped The Chainsmokers redeem themselves in the eyes of critics in 2018 was their genre-bending approach. While Alex and Drew might have fallen short on their pop-infused debut album, Memories: Do Not Open, they refined their style with the absolutely fantastic episodic release in 2018, Sick Boy.

In their latest teaser, it appears that The Chainsmokers will be stepping into the EDM rap world. The guys shared a screenshot of a folder labeled “Juice WRLD Collabs”. Yes, that is plural.

We have to imagine that this collaboration(s) will be something really special. Stayed tuned for release details as they become available.

What Came of the Juice WRLD Sessions

Reports at the time pointed to the two camps having worked on as many as five tracks together. Despite the folder full of collabs teased here, an official joint single from The Chainsmokers and Juice WRLD never actually got a proper release. One of the recordings, “In My Head,” eventually surfaced publicly, but only as an unfinished version rather than a polished single put out by either camp.

It’s a reminder of how much unreleased material floats around in dance and hip-hop crossover circles, plenty of collaborations get teased and worked on in the studio without ever making it to a final, official drop. The Chainsmokers, for their part, kept experimenting across genres throughout 2019, continuing the same genre-bending approach that made Sick Boy stand out the year before.

A Crossover That Made Sense on Paper

Pairing The Chainsmokers with Juice WRLD wasn’t as random as it might have seemed at first glance. By early 2019, Juice WRLD had already broken through with a run of hits that blended melodic rap with emo and pop-punk influences, a lane that overlapped nicely with The Chainsmokers’ own habit of pulling in guest vocalists from outside straight EDM. Sick Boy had already shown the duo were comfortable working across hip-hop, alternative, and pop textures in the same project, so a session with an artist like Juice WRLD fit right into where their sound was heading at the time.
