Reportedly Splitting Ties With His Label, Griz Begins Hinting At New Announcement
News started to leak and it was soon reported that Griz would be cutting ties with the label he helped create. Even though All Good Records was synonymous with Griz, he reportedly no longer retained full control of the label, and for reasons not yet disclosed, he would be walking away from the project. This had not been formally confirmed, but in the Griz community it was decently old news.
Griz then posted the below picture to Instagram. Several sheets of what appeared to be hand written notes were featured in the photo alongside the caption, “it’s about time we talked”. What could this announcement be? A formal explanation of the ordeal with All Good, or a new beginning? Only time would tell. All anyone knew for sure was that fans loved Griz and hoped all was well as he moved forward and continued to make the funky beats that move them.
The caption ended up being a preview for something bigger: within days, Griz wiped his social media down to that single post and followed up with a cryptic spoken-word video, also titled “It’s About Time We Talked.” The video didn’t confirm or deny the label rumors directly, and fans were left speculating for weeks about whether it signaled a new album, a new direction, or something else entirely. All Good Records itself never actually shut down, and it went on to remain the home for Griz’s own music.
The bigger news came about a year later, in January 2019, when Griz properly announced a new album alongside the single “I’m Good,” a horn-driven, feel-good track featuring Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg. That album, Ride Waves, arrived that April with additional features from DRAM, Matisyahu and others, and it became one of the most celebrated releases of his career, leaning into the soulful, funk-forward sound that’s always set him apart from the rest of the festival circuit.
Looking back, that vague “it’s about time we talked” post was really just Griz teasing a new chapter for his career, not the end of anything. It’s a good example of how quickly rumors can spiral in a tight-knit fanbase, and how much better things turned out than the initial speculation suggested.
