NERVO teams with Chief Keef on “Champagne”, and it sounds like radio gold

NERVO & Chief Keef have finally released their highly teased & anticipated track, “Champagne” out now on Spinnin’ Records. These two powerhouses in their respective industry have teamed to make “Champagne” a sure fire radio smash.

Starting off with NERVO‘s unmistakable vocals, this track has a very chilled out low maintenance melody that relies heavily on the beautiful vocals of NERVO. The drops remind me very much of “Closer” by The Chainsmokers – once you here the drop, it’s hard to think that some influence wasn’t pulled from “Closer” as that was a radio smash and this for sure is what the goal of this song is. Chief Keef goes in after the 1st drop with pure pop-style rap as he doesn’t curse or reference anything besides what sounds like a women he is trying to swoon.

Chief Keef going radio-friendly was a genuinely wild pairing

If you know Chief Keef from drill music, dark, aggressive Chicago street rap he basically helped invent, hearing him on a chilled-out, pop-leaning NERVO track is a real tonal 180. That’s what makes this collab worth pointing out beyond just being another EDM-meets-rap crossover, it’s two artists from genuinely opposite ends of the spectrum finding a version of each other’s sound that actually works, instead of just slapping a rap verse onto a dance beat and calling it a day.

NERVO already knew how to build a track around their own vocals

By this point NERVO had spent years as both performers and behind-the-scenes songwriters, so leaning on their own vocals as the emotional center of “Champagne” instead of bringing in an outside singer was a pretty natural move. It let them control the whole vibe of the track from the ground up, and having spent years writing hooks for other massive artists before going solo gave them a real sense of what actually sticks on radio.

Genre-blending collabs like this were everywhere for a stretch there, dance producers pairing up with rappers to chase that radio crossover sound “Closer” had already proven could work. “Champagne” is a solid entry in that whole wave, not the biggest hit to come out of it, but a genuinely fun example of two very different lanes of music meeting somewhere in the middle instead of just tacking a verse onto a beat.
