Four years after the release of their album, “Coexist,” the xx has formally announced the release date of their third full length album. The trio made a statement in October that they would be working on a new album amidst an announcement of forthcoming tour dates.
The third album, which will be released on January 13, 2017, is titled “I See You.” The group, which consists of Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie XX, said the album, “is characterized by a more outward-looking, open, and expansive approach.”
Accompanying the announcement was the release of the album’s first single, “On Hold.” Unlike the xx’s previous releases, “On Hold,” is characterized by a faster, more rhythmic beat, making it more of a dance tune. However, it still maintains the surreal, ambient-like qualities that have come to distinguish the xx’s unique sound. The song features a sample of Hall & Oates’s 1981 single, “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do).”
The album, which took over two years to record (March 2014-August 2016), consists of 10 tracks and will be released on Young Turks.
“We know these are uncertain times and we hope the joy and love we found making the record will get out into the world, in however small a way,” the band said.
