Why deadmau5 Headlining ASOT Was A Big Deal

Putting deadmau5 in the headliner slot ahead of Armin van Buuren on the A State of Trance stage was a notable booking choice on Ultra’s part, since deadmau5 has never been a trance artist in any traditional sense. His production style leans progressive house and electro, built around melodic, often moody arrangements rather than the euphoric build-and-release structure trance is known for. That contrast is exactly what made the slot interesting — deadmau5 has always been unpredictable about what kind of set he’ll actually play, and pairing his unpredictability against a stage built around one of the most beloved and specific subgenres in dance music practically guaranteed a set fans would be talking about.

Ultra 2016’s Stacked Techno Wing

This lineup also reflected how seriously Ultra had started taking its techno programming by 2016, with the Resistance stage bringing in heavyweight names like Richie Hawtin, Nicole Moudaber, and Carl Cox to anchor a corner of the festival built specifically for the genre’s purists. Coupled with Pendulum’s reunion performance after years apart, phase two made it clear that this Ultra lineup wasn’t just leaning on its usual crop of big room headliners. It was building out real depth across trance, techno, and drum and bass alongside the mainstage stars, which is a big part of why this particular lineup is still remembered fondly by longtime attendees.
