Tiësto & Tony Junior – “Get Down”

This past year saw two very distinct genres absolutely takeover, tropical and future house. With the tropical brand seemingly dominated by a few individuals, the future house market was wide open with numerous DJ’s attempting to recreate the magic that “Deep Down Low”, by Valentino Kahn, brought us. With one last effort before the end of 2015, the legend himself, Tiësto, and the-still-up-and-comer, Tony Junior, present to us, “Get Down”.

This bass heavy track, that comes out December 28th on Musical Freedom, has all the makings of another classic Beatport chart topper. With Tiesto taking the popular genre and throwing his own little twist on it, this unique future house track, is sure to make some interesting heatwaves across the dance music community.

For those keeping score, “Get Down” ended up landing right at the very end of December 2015 through Tiësto’s own Musical Freedom imprint, with a tie-in through Spinnin’ Records. Genre-wise it splits the difference between bass house and Melbourne bounce — Dancing Astronaut described it at the time as “a barrage of blaring horns and thunderous kicks” combined with “whiplashing wubs,” which is about as accurate a description of a Tiësto/Tony Junior team-up as you’re going to get. It also came with an official visualizer video through Spinnin’s YouTube channel, and went on to chart on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs list, which isn’t bad for a track that started as a “one last drop before the new year” kind of release.

Tony Junior, for anyone who isn’t familiar, is Dutch producer Tony Claessens — one of the names who’s been quietly pushing the bass house sound alongside bigger names like this one, and this collab is a solid example of why he keeps getting looked at as one to watch. Pairing him with a veteran like Tiësto, who’s never been shy about jumping on whatever sound is dominating the moment, made this a pretty natural fit heading into 2016.

Looking back at it now, “Get Down” also lands right at an interesting turning point in Tiësto’s own catalog — 2015 was the year the bass house and future house wave really took over his sets and his production, a lane he’d keep exploring for the next couple of years before eventually swinging back toward bigger, more anthemic room-filling records. As a snapshot of where his head was at heading into 2016, this one’s a pretty fun listen in hindsight.
