Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Dani Deahl at a panel discussion about “Women in EDM” during Movement Detroit weekend. This TEDx talk reminded me of how strong and determined she is as an artist, journalist, and an advocate for equality. There have been many talks about women in the music industry which have backfired and resulted in artists being described as “female Djs”(Annie Mac: Stop Asking Me Questions About Being A Woman) instead of artist. Ultimately focusing on the gender itself not the issue. Nevertheless, the issue is still here, lurking in the corner perhaps, yet still present. Dani's talk is a step towards the right direction when addressing women in the Music Industry and this is why.
Dani blends both personal experiences and the social issues that are contributing to the observable gender gap. She does a beautiful job of encouraging women to follow their curiosity and dive into mixing and Music Production. While still keeping the focus on the root of the problem, creating an inclusive discussion of sexsim, music, social norms, and how we can be a part of a positive changes in our environment. It is a “pro-everyone” talk that aims to inspire both men and women to believe in themselves and fight against being put into a gender specific box that limit their aspirations.
