Unlike Pluto
EDM Artists > Unlike Pluto
Unlike Pluto started out as a producer who just wanted to make people move, and turned into an artist writing some of the most emotionally raw tracks in the dance-adjacent rock lane. Behind the project is Armond Arabshahi, an Atlanta native who started on piano at 5, later picked up guitar, drums, and clarinet, and went on to study at Georgia State and Emory University before turning music into a full-time career.
He came up through EDM but never stayed there. Early on he worked with labels like Monstercat, Mad Decent, Ultra Records, and Spinnin’ Records, but as his sound evolved he pushed further into electronic-rock territory, blending alternative rock, indie, and grunge influences with dance production. As he’s put it himself, he’d “go crazy” if he only made straight EDM for the rest of his career — and that restlessness is basically the whole Unlike Pluto story.
His signature moment came with 2017’s “Everything Black,” a Monstercat release featuring Mike Taylor that went double gold and somehow became a staple in gaming communities, showing up in streams and highlight reels for years after release. It’s the song that put Unlike Pluto on the map and still anchors his live sets.
Since then he’s kept building out a genuinely huge, independent catalog. His Pluto Tapes series — weekly experimental drops released straight to YouTube — let him test out new sounds without label gatekeeping, while full releases like Cherry Blossom Nightmare (2022) and Ghost Gardens (2024) leaned further into his rock and alt influences. He’s also run side projects like Why Mona (with Joanna Jones) and the lo-fi instrumental outlet Like Saturn.
Now operating as a fully independent artist, Unlike Pluto is proof that you don’t need a major label machine to build a dedicated fanbase, just a restless, DIY streak and a willingness to genre-hop wherever the songwriting takes you. Between the constant releases and the side projects, he’s one of the more prolific and unpredictable artists to come out of the EDM scene.
