Sub Focus

Sub Focus has been one of drum and bass’s most reliable hitmakers for over two decades, and he’s done it by refusing to stay in one lane. Born Nicolaas Douwe Douwma in the UK, he actually started out as a rock kid obsessed with Nirvana before discovering production software as a teenager and realizing he could build entire tracks without ever picking up a guitar. Once he heard M-Beat’s “Incredible,” drum and bass had him for good.

His break came in classic underground fashion: in 2003, a friend slipped his demo CD to RAM Records boss Andy C at a club. Andy loved it so much he signed every track on the spot. That relationship launched Sub Focus into the UK dance scene, and after building his name on Frequency and then RAM, he dropped his self-titled debut album in 2009 — a record that helped push drum and bass toward a bigger, more festival-ready sound without losing the genre’s grit.

From there, Sub Focus kept evolving. Torus followed in 2013, and he’s built a run of collaborations that show off just how versatile he is — the joint album Portals with Wilkinson in 2020, “Ready to Fly” with Dimension, and production work on Example’s “Kickstarts,” which climbed all the way to number three on the UK charts. He’s never been an artist who just makes drum and bass for drum and bass heads; his records consistently cross over into the wider dance and pop conversation while still hitting hard on a club system.

His momentum hasn’t slowed down recently either. 2023’s Evolve won Best Album at the Drum and Bass Arena Awards, and he followed it up with “On & On” alongside bbyclose in early 2025 before releasing his fourth studio album, Contact, that November — featuring collaborators like Fireboy DML, IRAH, Katy B, and Emily Makis.

What keeps Sub Focus relevant after all these years is that he treats drum and bass like a genre worth pushing forward, not a formula to repeat. Big room energy, sharp songwriting, and a willingness to bring in outside collaborators from pop and hip-hop have made him one of the few DnB artists who can headline both underground raves and mainstream festival stages without missing a beat.
